Larry Bruce Ferrell

I lived in Cane Fork from 1947 to 1963. I attended Loudendale Elementary, Horace Mann Jr. High and Charleston High (Soph year). My dad, David Michael Ferrell, was transferred to New Jersey in 1963 and I left Ferrell's Hollow for the big City (Next to NYC).

My good school friends were Allan Means, Jimmy Davis, Greg Ballard, and Jimmy Keefer (who I still stay in touch with). I also remember Lana Mooney, Becky Williams, Marsha Means and others. The other Ferrell's living in Cane Fork were my Uncles Ernest, Luther, Ira, Carl and Clarence. My sister Betty married Junior Dunlap. My brother David Lee, (Crack) was an all-state Baseball player while at Charleston High School.

Some of my greatest memories were in Loudendale. There was the trips to the Bears Den, playing baseball in Kanawha State Forest (remember that short left field), the flash floods, ....what a great time.

Of course, most of you know my first cousin Conchatta who is a movie actress in Hollywood. My son Michael is presently in Chicago also trying his best at acting (Second City). My Daughter, Jennifer, is currently getting her PhD at UNC-Greensboro.

My wife Linda and I have a few more years until retirement and really love living in Wilmington, N.C. Except for the Hurricanes visiting our area it is a great place. Since most West Virginians travel to Myrtle Beach you may know of Wilmington which is approximately one hour north along the coastline. If you want to visit a nice family type beach come to Wilmington. I graduated from Rutgers University and am presently an Enviromental Director for a Pharmaceutical Company.

My nephews Dana, David Lee Jr., and my neice Robin still live in Charleston. Dana is also a teacher at George Washington High School whom some of you may know.

I hope to get back to Loudendale next summer for the Ferrell reunion if my first cousin, Donna Shafer can put one together.

So, if any of my Old school friends are still around please contact me at nafus1@ix.netcom.com.

Don and Margie Dean
I was born and raised in Loudendale, the daughter of Homer and Clara Comer. Our homeplace was almost at the entrance of Kanawha State Forest, on the hill across the creek from where Steve Clark lives, beside where Paul and Myrna Parsons now have their home.

Don was also born and raised in Loudendale, the son of Sherman and Mae Dean. Their last homeplace on Loudendale was across the creek from the Loudendale Nazarene Church in Cane Fork.

Don and I both attended Cane Fork School, Thomas Jefferson Junior High and Charleston High School. We were married in 1959. Don was working for Greenbrier Dairy and I was working at the State House. My boss was Lowell Witters.

In 1964 Don got a call to go to Manteca, California to work for LOF Glass, Inc. We moved to California and I went to work for Wells Fargo Bank. Realizing I needed more education, the bank sent me to school at Delta College in Stockton, California. What a culture shock! Remember, this was the hippie generation and the Height-Asbury scene. I begged Don "take me back to Loudendale where normal people live". Nevertheless, we stayed nine years. Then in 1973 LOF Glass, Inc. transferred us to Laurinburg, North Carolina. We raised our children here and have found a second home. Loudendale will always be our first choice home.

Growing up in Loudendale was a privilege. The old saying "it takes a village to raise a child" was true in my case. I was raised by my parents, neighbors and the Loudendale Freewill Baptist Church. My best friends were my cousins, Carolyn Comer (Peele), Pat Comer (Reveal), Linda Songer (Rowland) and Gloria Matheny. My high school friends were Janet Carte (Painter), Mary Hudson (McCormick) and Anna Kay Nutter (Hall).

My mentors and advisers were Rose Shrewsbury, Mary and Frank Clements, Bertie Hall (George), and Jobe Comer. Jobe owned the only store in Loudendale when I was growing up, and was also a Deacon at the church. He always had a word of encouragement and praise for my accomplishments.

Don’s best friends were Harold Burton Hall, Buck Riffe, Don Petry, George Clements, and Glen Dean Cecil to name a few. I suppose his mentor was Glen Petry. He also spent a lot of time at Bertie Hall George’s home.

Our memories of Loudendale mostly center around the Church activities, Sunday School Picnics and class parties. (We also remember a few partys not associated with the church, for instance the party where Don and I met. It was held at the home of Harold and James Rutledge.) We also remember fondly of ice-skating on the frozen dam in Kanawha State Forest. We also remember the wiener-roasts in the park and Mr. Sizemore running us out at 10:00 PM.

Don and I are retired now. I worked 25 years in the Banking industry and he retired with 35 years at LOF, Glass. We celebrated our 40 year wedding anniversary this year.

Don is singing with The Spiritual Sounds Quartet from Laurinburg, North Carolina. Most of our time is spent traveling with the Quartet and our church work. We both are on the Board of Directors of the Laurinburg Church of the Nazarene.

(By the way, The Spiritual Sounds will be singing July 15th at the all night singing at the Jackson County Fairgrounds, Cottageville, WVa. We hope to see some of our old friends there.)

Don and I raised five great children, and we are very proud of all of them.

Eddie lives in Ocala, Florida and is employed with Country Hearth Bakery. He has two girls, Jessica, age 16 and Brittany age ll.

John is a Mechanical Engineer with LOF Glass, Inc. He will be getting married August 12, 2000. He and his fiancee, Tina, both live in Laurinburg, NC.

Lucinda and her husband, Allen, live in Rockingham, NC. Cindy is Office Manager for Northside Quick-Lube Company.

Craig and his wife, Chasity, live in Laurel Hill, NC. Craig is the Gilt Selection Manager for Carolls Foods, Inc.

Curtis and his wife, Tammy, live in Laurinburg, NC. Curtis is employed in management with West Point-Stevens. They have three children, John Eric, age 14, Ashley, age 12 and Kristen, age 9.
