Kanawha State Forest is located only seven miles from Charleston. Some of the state's most popular picnic areas are here, along with significant hiking and cross-country skiing opportunies. The swimming pool and playgrounds attract families during the summer season, and the fully equipped campground is one of the most popular in the Charleston area.
The Forest is 9,300 acres and is noted by naturalists for it's diverse wildflower and bird populations. Weaving through the Forest are numerous trails, some for begining hikers and others for more advanced hikers, looking for a challenge. Bikers are welcome on several trails as well.
Kanawha State Forest was built in the late 1930's and early 1940's by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Currently, the Kanawha State Forest Foundation is comprised mainly of ex-CCCers who had served at Camp Kanawha in their youth. They were retired, but willing to donate their time and skills to help rejuvenate the Forest.
